The Holly and The Ivy Row – Featured Christmas Carol Row-Along

The Holly and The Ivy Row – My Featured Christmas Carol Row

It’s my day to show my featured Christmas Carol Row!  The Christmas Carol that I chose was The Holly and The Ivy.  I chose this because I wanted to do a traditionally pieced row and I had a holly block in mind.  The individual blocks in this row could easily be used to create a border on a larger project.  You could also increase the size of one and make it the focal point with Christmas fabric borders to create a stunning piece.  The finished size of the row is 12″x30″ and is pictured as a horizontal row.  To create a vertical row you could simply rotate the two center ivy blocks.

I started off putting my row together with the holly block.  I wanted something simple that would go together quickly and show off the fabrics!  A sponsor for the Row-Along Northcott Fabrics was generous enough to provide these beautiful fabrics to designers to sew out the rows.  The photos really do not do it justice.  These fabrics really sparkle and shout Christmas spirit! The fabrics so generously provided by Northcott for this row are:

Toscana 9020-54 (crown),

Artisan Spirit Shimmer 20259M-73 (ivy),

Artisan Spirit Shimmer 20260M-24 (holly berries),

and Toscana 9020-11 (background).

The Holly and the Ivy

Once I had the Holly blocks, the rest of the row just came together!  There are three simple pieced blocks representing the crown, the holly and the ivy in this classic Christmas Carol.  I hope you enjoy this pattern and I would love to see your finished rows and quilts from this Row-Along!

  1. Great to have you in our Row. I like your design and I will not be the only one. I have a lot of beginning quilters in my lessons, and many of them are overwhelmed by so many beautifull designs. Yours is looking great and still reachable for beginners. You show them how a simple block can make a great design. Thanks, Heleen

  2. I like your row very much, and I like that it’s all pieced. It’s a beautiful representation of this song. Thank you and the sponsors for the free things you are giving us. I visited your FB as Stacey.

  3. I have not heard this song before so I went on You Tube and found it. It’s a pretty song. Thanks for the lovely pattern.

  4. I have not heard of this Christmas carol, so will need to find a youtube for it. Maybe it will be familiar after hearing it..hope so! Your block is lovely!

  5. I have never heard of Holly and Ivy that I can remember, I need to go find it now. You have such a pretty row, thank you so much!!

  6. I like your choice of Christmas Carol. I played this once as a violin solo with the accompaniment played by handbells. I can see this block/row being quite versatile. Thanks.

  7. Chelsea, I think this is a great row, and the colors are equally lovely, It’s almost like they dance around the row showing off the great pattern you’ve created.

Thank you for participating this year, you’ve been wonderful to work with and I hope you’ll consider coming along for the ride again next year.

  8. I know it takes a lot of time and effort to make a block or row. It is so generous of you to give it to us. Love the row. Thanks so much
