Super Hero Quilts – Part One

Super Hero Quilts – Part One

Have you jumped on the super hero quilts craze?  I have done some myself, have quilted some for others, and seen some fantastic ones online!  I am going to pull up some older photos and even some new ones that I had to wait until after the holidays to post.   Feel free to comment or share your super hero quilts!  If you see one you like that isn’t listed in the shop contact me and I will get you a custom quote.  Now on to the quilts!

Captain America

This quilt is visually pretty simple.  It’s a star in a circle, in a circle x 3 in a rectangle.   I knew it was possible when I took this one on, what I didn’t know was how to get this large of circles, each pair a half inch difference in size.   There are templates and special rulers for smaller circles available, but nothing in the forty inch range.   I ended up going a little old school with a pen and a measure of string.  Tacking the end to the center of the fabric and tracing the circles.   There may be a more accurate way, but this worked surprisingly well for me.  When I assembled the quilt, I actually sewed all the larger circles and the rectangle all together before the blue circle and star were attached.

The Star

The star for the center could be accomplished a multitude of ways as well.   I tried a few different ways and even considered an embroidered star on the center circle.   My final decision was to piece a block from a pentagon and five triangles.   I decided against the embroidery only because the recipient was a newborn and the quilt needed to survive many washings.

I think the final layout is good for this quilt.   It lays flat and didn’t add to the bulk.   The star is blind stitched to the blue circle.   The blue circle was also the only one that was created by sewing a backing to the fabric in a circle and turning right side out.   This was also blind stitched to the next circle.   The center popped because it set up a little from the rest of the quilt.   It really gave that rounded feel like a shield.

Finally, to add on the backing.   This needed to be super cuddly, so minky dots in a soft grey worked perfectly.   I added a swirly star quilting which really showed up well on the minky backing.   Binding on and this quilt was finished and ready to go!

  1. Hi Chelsea-I am wondering if you have a pattern available for me to purchase for the captain America shield. I am new to quilting and my son has put in a request for a quilt for my grandson and he wants the shield in the middle. Yours is the best I’ve found.

    1. Thank you so much. I do not have a pattern available for this quilt. They are a series of circles cut and sewn together with the center circle being an applique. The star is pieced with a hexagon in the center. So much of the quilt was on the fly I really didn’t write down the pattern, but I hope this helps some.
